Manjit Singh Gill

Manjeet Singh Gill is counted among the recipients of the Arjuna Award, along with Jarnail Singh and Gurdev Singh. Although he did not receive this honor, he was worthy of it without a doubt. His remarkable playing skills and contribution to football in Mahilpur led to discussions about him on the national level. Khairar Achharwal village has produced more than a dozen excellent football players, and Manjeet Singh was born on June 10, 1950, in the house of Sardar Shingara Singh. His mother, Ratan Kaur, nurtured and supported him, standing by him on the football field. Seeing the passion and talent in him, coaches were ecstatic, and he quickly rose to fame. He even captained the Indian football team.

After completing his schooling in Mahilpur, he joined the Sports College in Jalandhar in 1996. That same year, he began showcasing his playing skills in Leader Club Jalandhar. In 1969, after completing his B.A., he was selected for the Indian team in 1970, which played in Bangkok. Manjeet Singh not only earned recognition in newspapers and magazines by scoring goals but also instilled a sense of pride in Indian football.

During the Pre-Olympic Games in Rangoon in 1972, he represented India as a talented footballer. After playing for East Bengal Club in Kolkata for a year, he played for Punjab Police, JCT, and Powercom Club. In 1985, he obtained a coaching diploma from Patiala. From 1987, he was appointed as the football coach at Punjab University, Patiala. Under his guidance, many football players showcased their talent and flourished. In 1990, the Sports Authority of India appointed him to produce young talent in Mahilpur.

In 1973, Manjit played the Murdeka Cup in Kuala Lumpur. In 1974, he was selected for the Asian Games. In the same year, he played a significant role in the Punjab team's victory in the Santosh Trophy, defeating the host team 6-0 from Bengal. He captained the Indian team for the Merdeka Cup and also played in the President's Cup held in Seoul. He gained recognition and popularity among Kolkata clubs and football enthusiasts when he joined East Bengal Club in 1978. In 1982, he played in the Santosh Trophy and emerged as one of the top players. However, at the age of 43, he bid farewell to his sporting career and departed from this world.

When he passed away in December 1992 due to a tragic accident, it created a wave of shock in the Indian football community. Manjit Singh Gill's achievements in all his games can be compiled in a book dedicated solely to him. He was not only a versatile footballer and coach but also a multi-talented individual. He got married to Kamaljeet Kaur and was the father of three children until his last breath. The Dhadial Amar Singh Shaunki Memorial Trust of Mahilpur honored him posthumously. He received numerous accolades and awards throughout his career, including recognition at the P. Harbhajan Singh Tournament's Silver Jubilee celebration. Rmandeep Kaur, Harpreet Kaur, and Gurjeet Singh Kakka continue to carry forward their father's legacy.
